Teas Unique is a company that has a perfect name. Their selection of teas and snacks are indeed very unique and intriguing. For those unfamiliar with Korean teas, I’d really recommend checking them out! Teas Unique were so kind as to send me some samples to review, and so over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing my thoughts on several of their beautiful 2017 teas.

The first of the teas I tasted was this beautiful Jeju Island First Flush from the 2017 harvest. This is a single estate tea, coming from Mt. Halla, Seongeup Village, in Jeju Island, Korea. According to Teas Unique’s website:

This first flush (first machine harvest of the year) whole leaf oxidized hongcha black tea was machine harvested after Ipha (the beginning of the summer season) then wilted, tossed, rolled, oxidized and dry roasted. Selecting only the bud and two leaves from the harvested material, this USDA certified organic tea is similar in quality to handpicked sejak (small beak) jaksul (sparrow’s beak) hongcha (black tea). This single estate tea comes from the fertile volcanic soil of the cool eastern slope of Mt. Halla on Jeju Island, located off Korea’s southern coast.

It smells soft and woody. It’s got a very intriguing dry aroma that reminds me a little of Taiwanese Ruby 18.  I used my favourite teapot method for this tea, using two teaspoons (equivalent of approximately 4 grams) per cup of just boiled water. After 5 minutes steeping, the liquor was a beautiful reddish amber, and totally clear. The flavour on the first infusion is savoury sweet and pleasant, malty with citrus and a slight floral note that is refreshing and tastes like springtime. Once again, there’s a little something in here that reminds me of a Ruby 18. This tea is fairly light for a black tea and the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy for a black tea and there’s no bitterness at all. This tea also lends itself well to resteeping, with easily a good 3 to 4 (or possibly more, given your infusion times) infusions coming out of it.

If you’re unfamiliar with Korean teas, I definitely recommend Teas Unique, and this Jeju Island First Flush in particular, as a place to start!
